Seahorse, the seafood-heavy restaurant at the W Union Square hotel, has been open for about six months and seems to have comfortably found its groove — the dining room was absolutely packed on a recent weekday with business diners and hotel guests. But all eyes were on us when the baked Alaska ($38) we ordered arrived. The flaming dessert is prepared tableside, and the server does a little fire show before dramatically pouring the rum over the meringue. The dessert gets carved up onto individual plates, where the smoky, s'mores-like egg whites were a wonderful foil for the ice cream and cake below. Or'esh is another runaway hit from Eugene Remm and Tilman Fertitta, the team behind the Catch and the Corner Store. And while chef Nadav Greenberg offers a slew of memorable dishes that come from the oven he's named Sofia, the Jerusalem bagel ($19) comes with baba ganoush, matbucha, and mint tzatziki, and that bagel, crunchy on the outside, almost creamy inside, is an excellent way to start the meal. There is much debate, at least according to my Spanish partner, around just how dense a tortilla de patata (Spanish potato omelet) should be. The slice ($12) we shared while downing tapas at El Quijote, the legendary restaurant housed within the Hotel Chelsea, packed the ideal amount of juiciness in the top and middle (the tricky part is always to not overcook the eggs) and comes served with a heaping spoonful of aioli. For a forthcoming episode of an Eater video series, I got to grab lunch at Blue Ribbon Sushi. I was drawn to the crispy rice ($27) — rectangle-shaped, packed rice that was just seared enough without being too gritty, topped with a nice mixture of actually spicy tuna and serrano pepper slices; the avocado and eel sauce added a nice creamy and sweet balance to the bite.119 Sullivan Street, near Prince Street, Soho — Nadia Chaudhury, deputy editor, Northeast |
A lively Mediterranean fish

Cod has always been a favorite of mine — the firm, delicate filet is perfect for purists who love fish, but it also works as an ideal canvas for sauces and more complex dishes. The North African offering ($38) at lively Mediterranean spot Mama Mezze is packed with fragrant seasonings — jalapeño, cumin, paprika, caraway seeds, garlic, pepper, cilantro, and harissa. It's cooked in a sauce with cherry tomatoes and preserved lemon, then finished with preserved lemon segments. Superstar K-pop band BTS dined at Flatiron's Korean barbecue restaurant Cote over the weekend. A rep for the restaurant tells Eater that they had lots of meats, banchan, egg souffles, stews, and special tableside japchae. Coal-oven pizzeria Patsy's opened its next new location inside the Freehand New York hotel on Friday, March 20, in Gramercy. This is the over-90-year-old restaurant's third location in Manhattan; the expansion is part of the restaurant's new partnership with Promise Hospitality Group. Design studio Roman and Williams's new French fine dining restaurant inside the Sotheby's on the Upper East Side, Marcel, is opening on Thursday, April 16, per Feed Me and its Resy page, although reservations are already booked up for the first four days. The team's also opening a French bakery, La Mercerie Patisserie, at the same address later this spring. Joe's Steam Rice Roll is opening its next location at 10 Doyers Street, a historic street in Chinatown. West Village Italian restaurant Mr. Capri is adding a new happy hour special starting on Monday, March 23. The $25 deal includes one drink and a bunch of Italian dishes like pasta and focaccia.
