| SCORE ANOTHER ONE FOR EMOTIONAL FILMMAKING, AS SURPRISE WIN FOR 'HAMNET' INJECTS SOME DRAMA INTO THE BEST PICTURE RACE |
After watching One Battle After Another win all season long at critics group events, Hamnet's Golden Globes victory was a big one, even if it came on the same night One Battle also won big with four trophies including Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, and both Director and Screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson. In some respects, Hamnet seems perfectly poised to capitalize on its new status as the movie that might, if there is any hope at this point, be a contender to give One Battle a run for its money at the Oscars. Emotional movies like Hamnet, even if it has been slow to ignite at the box office, often count for a lot with Academy members. Having (producer) Steven Spielberg start your acceptance speech is also not a bad thing at all. It's also great timing. Voting for Academy Award nominations starts today and runs through Friday. The phase-one campaigning and glad handing will be slowing down considerably this week as Oscar voters check off their ballots. >>>Pete Hammond's Take Related: Full Winners List Snubs & Surprises What You Didn’t See On TV Nikki Glaser Commemorates Rob Reiner’s Legacy The Best Looks From The Red Carpet Afterparty Photos Full Coverage |

The current contract won’t expire until June 30. Unlike in past cycles, SAG-AFTRA will be the first above-the-line union to sit down with the AMPTP, taking the place often held by the Directors Guild. “Part of the reason we wanted to go first is that we wanted to be able to have the time we feel is necessary,” Astin told Deadline in an interview during CES in Las Vegas. “We appreciate that [AMPTP members] are willing to engage early in order to properly examine each item.” Referencing internal data monitored by SAG-AFTRA officials, he added, “We perceive the beginning of a recovery happening in the industry, and we were very mindful of wanting to protect that, and starting early and going first, I think, gives everyone a little bit of comfort that whatever issues we have to work, that we can do it in a way that will not impede that.” >>>Read The Interview |
