THE BIG STORY
AI flight veers off track after landing in Mumbai airport; 3 tyres burst
It's been a nervous time to fly in the country. Six weeks after AI 171 crashed into a medical school's hostel, another one had an incident in Mumbai: an aircraft veered off the runway due to heavy rainfall in the city. The flight was AI 2744, and was flying into the financial capital from Kochi.
Despite three burst tyres, the aircraft managed to taxi to the gate safely. Air India said that all passengers and crew members were safe. More details here.
THE BIG QUESTION
What happened during Day 1 of the Monsoon Parliament session?
The aircraft skid is a good reminder that the monsoon season is in full swing this time of the year. With the season, comes the legislature: the monsoon session of the Parliament kicked off yesterday. Or at least, tried to.
The opposition was united in thwarting both Rajya and Lok Sabha from conducting any business. They wanted to talk about Operation Sindoor.
The session was supposed to start at 11 am, but was pushed to 4 pm due to the kerfuffle. Finally, the session is to be reconvened on July 22.
What else?
Despite the differences, the Rajya Sabha could still unite against one common foe: Justice Yashwant Varma. More than 200 MPs submitted a motion to impeach the Allahabad court judge.
A large pile of cash was burnt in Varma's house, leading to subsequent discovery of much more money from the judge's housing premises.
7 explosions, 187 dead, 800 injured, 0 accused: The horror of 2006 Mumbai train blasts
Nineteen years after a series of coordinated blasts tore through Mumbai’s local trains, killing 187 people and injuring over 800, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 men who were convicted in the case.
The court pointed out that the prosecution did a poor job of handling the evidence, and freed the men.
As for the men, they are now free — but after having lost 10 years of their lives to this case.
