Hi everyone,
Summer happens to be my favorite season, not least because it's when my birthday occurs (I'll be a year older the next time you read one of my emails), but because it feels like a bit of a universal break, when everyone slows down a bit. New York City clears out, making restaurants easier to get into and the streets just a little bit quieter. The closest I'm getting to sand these days is the sandbox at a playground, but summer still feels like a precious season, associated with cold treats, unstructured time, and getaways.
This summer, so far, can be summed up with one word: sticky. It's felt incongruously hot everywhere I go, made even stickier with sunscreen and dripping ice cream. (I'll let you figure out which one of these my children love and which one they hate.)
I've been desperately trying to beat the heat by escaping to air-conditioned restaurant dining rooms, hunting down icy treats, and eating lots of raw seafood with chilled wine. You don't need a guide on how to have a fun summer, but if you're looking for ideas, my colleagues have put together a whole primer dedicated to embracing the season — whether you prefer a trip to the Mexican coast (cookbook author Rick Martínez has a whole guide to the region's glorious seafood and tacos), want to make your own shaved ice, or just need some tips on how to order when it's ridiculously hot out.
Your summer rituals might involve a lake or just a night on the patio, but either way I hope you're eating or drinking something that cools you down. Below, you'll find some of my favorite reads from the past two weeks. If you liked this email, please forward it to a friend or encourage them to sign up here.
