Despite all of the ominous trends of late about linear TV's decline and media companies' acquiescence to the White House, The Late Show's cancellation Thursday still carried a big jolt. Host Stephen Colbert broke the news to the audience at New York's Ed Sullivan Theater and said with a gallows grin as they loudly groaned, "I share your feelings." The official explanation from CBS was that it was purely a business decision. Yet it is also a fact that the network's corporate parent, Paramount Global, is still trying to gain government approval for its long-pending merger with Skydance Media. Colbert not only routinely mocked Trump but called Paramount's settlement of Trump's 60 Minutes lawsuit a "big fat bribe." ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, captioning a video on Instagram of Colbert sharing the news with his audience, wrote, “Love you Stephen. F*ck you and all your Sheldons CBS.” Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen told Deadline it was “a sad day for late-night television” and CBS. He called Colbert a "singular talent." Trump waited until this morning to weigh in. "I absolutely love that Colbert’ got fired," he posted on Truth Social. "His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next." >>>On Air Until May |
