After seven movies, nearly 30 years and more than $4 billion in global grosses, Tom Cruise looks set to retire his Ethan Hunt character with the eighth climactic installment, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. And with a Cannes Film Festival premiere, the franchise’s farewell is set for plenty of fanfare — in contrast to the way its seventh movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, was stunted by the almost simultaneous Barbenheimer phenomenon two years ago.
