Defence will get all the resources it needs: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assessed the operational readiness of the armed forces in the backdrop of the lingering border row with China, carried out a security review, and asked the military to stay prepared for new and emerging threats at the Combined Commanders’ Conference in Bhopal.

The conference focused on a raft of issues including evolving a joint military vision for the future, theaterisation, self-reliance, modernisation and cyber security, officials familiar with the matter said. Read more.

Budding interests: Citizen scientists are tracking changes in flowering patterns

Feasts, festivals and rituals are altered when flowers go missing in spring.

“I’ve been searching for the white neem blossoms. Grinding the flowers with a few tender neem leaves to make a chutney is an annual ritual during Gudi Padwa (the Maharashtrian new year celebrated in late March or early April). But there is no trace of either on the trees this year,” says Mumbai botanist Sayee Girdhari, 28.

Girdhari is a project coordinator with SeasonWatch, a citizen-science initiative that invites people to record the arrival of flowers, fruits and leaves in the trees around them. In the 10 years since the initiative started collecting this data, anecdotal evidence has pointed to shifts in traditionally established patterns, she says. Read more.

Ringing in a revolution

The rich haul of four gold medals at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, which concluded in Delhi last week, proves that India’s fighters are serious contenders at the top level. This is great news, because just five or six years ago, a fading MC Mary Kom was still India’s best prospect in women’s boxing, the boxing federation was mired in factional politics and it had been banned by the international governing body for the sport.

Then a change began. At the end of 2016, a reconstituted Indian Boxing Federation took over, run by an entirely new set of people, and acquired international recognition. This meant that fighters, whether at the elite or the grassroots levels, could finally hope to get the support they needed. Read more.
