Katherine Pope was named President of Sony Pictures Television Studios last summer, 15 years after she previously ran a TV studio, NBC Universal TV Studios (now Universal Television). Back then, broadcast networks were atop the food chain, with vertical integration on the rise. Today, broadcast and cable have been upstaged by streaming, with vertical integration still a factor in pickup and renewal decisions. Pope is starting with somewhat of a clean slate as several of the independent TV studio’s longest-running hits announced end dates since the beginning of the year, The Blacklist on NBC, Cobra Kai on Netflix and Outlander on Starz. There is also momentum, with a string of good news in January, from the strong launches of The Last of Us on HBO, which already earned a second season renewal, and Accused on Fox, to Starz greenlighting an Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood.

Prime Video has finalized a Season 2 renewal for the hit series starring and executive produced by Chris Pratt, and also has picked up an untitled prequel/Ben Edwards origin series headlined and executive produced by Taylor Kitsch, from The Terminal List creator/executive producer David DiGilio...Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury has renewed hit game show Family Feud through the 2025-26 season, taking the Fremantle-produced show into its landmark 50th year on television. Leading station groups Fox, CBS, Nexstar, Scripps and Tegna have signed multi-year renewals...The 10th season of NBC's drama mainstay The Blacklist, which debuts this month, will be its last. 🚗 Netflix and General Motors have set a co-marketing deal to put GM electric vehicles in upcoming series and films. To kick off the partnership, the companies have cast Will Ferrell in a 60-minute commercial airing on the Super Bowl. In the spot, Ferrell is inserted into Squid Game, Bridgerton and Army of the Dead.
🤝 It may have been in the single digits in snowy Park City for this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but deals defrosted at the first in-person event since 2020.
