As an endless source of both excitement and consternation, ChatGPT has captured our collective imagination. In a series of recent articles co-authored with experts from BHI and BCG X, we aim to look beyond today’s hype—to a future (perhaps quite near) in which ChatGPT and other Generative AI systems play a critical role in business and society. Generative AI will enable many companies to do what has previously been out of reach:truly democratize AI access and adoption as barriers to entry fall. Before long, generative algorithms will drive innovation across industries. But a new set of vulnerabilities and ethical issues will create risk and threaten to erode trust. As organizations identify novel ways to deploy Generative AI, they must be sure to roll out robust Responsible AI programs. The latter is just one business fundamental that leaders need to double down on. Another pillar? Humans aren’t going anywhere. Yet as psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer warns in a new Thinkers & Ideas podcast interview, if humans don’t make themselves smarter , their use of AI can cause the atrophy of skills, create ambiguity around truthfulness, and foster unhealthy reliance. Indeed, humans will need to become careful seekers of truth in a world in which AI is designed to persuade. Finally, an article from the Center for Macroeconomics archives offers an historical perspective to this frenzied moment: Technology is but the fuel of productivity growth, not the spark. As always, we would love to read your thoughts and reactions. Best regards, Martin Reeves and François Candelon | | | |
